sheetsworks : commisions are hard .

One of my best and most talented buds Melissa Molitor has done it again. She was selected to design a room in the Richmond Symphony Orchestra Design House. Basically it is a home to show case the best interior designers in Richmond- it is a pretty big deal. We are super proud of her!

Not only has she designed an amazing room (it will be revealed September 7), but she also asked Dan to do some custom art for the room. How great is that?! It's pretty great. It is another way to get Dan's name and art out to a bigger audience. We were thrilled but also nervous.

Commissions/custom pieces are tough to pull off. You have to produce something that the client wants; keeping in mind specific colors and subject matter while still making it feel like a piece that you would create and that you are proud to put your name on. I'm not gonna lie, every time Dan gets a commission we struggle. I say we because I become very involved in most commissioned works. We work really well together (most of the time) and we bounce ideas off of each other. Sometimes I even paint a little. I was really happy with the way these paintings turned out. In fact, I think it is Dan's (our) most successful commission yet!

Melissa wanted 2 paintings to lean on the wall. She envisioned the first 8' painting to be very neutral and abstract and she wanted the second smaller 4' painting to be really bright and colorful. These are the fabrics from UFab that Melissa used and the basic color scheme that she wanted to go with...

Gorgeous fabric combo.

Here are the paintings and a little taste of the room:

Details:
The large neutral abstract painting became a sky with some birds- Dan is real real good at drawing birds.

The small colorful one resembles a tree.
I think they look lovely together, work beautifully in the room and still feel like they were created by
 dan sheets (and wife). Success!
